EXPERTISE

Dr. Hartung was admitted in 2002 to the bar in Stuttgart and then he received his J.D. doctorate in 2004 at the University of Zurich on "art looting in war and persecution". His dissertation was repeatedly reviewed in academic publications and was honored in 2007 with the Carl-Sonnenschein-Price.

Dr. Hartung has received the theoretical knowledge of three certified lawyer trainings, which he deepens in annual trainings:

  • inheritance/ succession (certified theoretical knowledge)
  • tax law (certified theoretical knowledge)
  • copyright and media law (certified theoretical knowledge)

He frequently acts as a Senior Lecturer and Adjunct Professor for International Art & IP Law at the Universities of Munich (LMU), Graz (KFU) and Hagen since 2006, 2010 and 2014.

Dr. Hartung is recommended as a Global Law Expert for Art Law in Germany (2016 edition). The practice group Art of Buse Heberer Fromm is acclaimed to be the Art Law Firm Team of the year 2016 by ACQ 5 Law Awards 2016 in the time Dr. Hartung worked there.

In 2011 he became a mediator for Art and Cultural Heritage in the international list of ICOM (International Museum Association) and WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) .

Dr. Hartung is also a full member of the Society of Trist and Estate Practicioners (TEP).

He represented and represents well- known Art Law cases, including but not limited the collection of Cornelius Gurlitt (so-called "Schwabing Art Fund"), the city of Munich in the discussion about the "Swamp Legend" by Paul Klee in the Lenbachhaus, the former owner of the "most expensive carpet in the world" and artists of the East Side Gallery. Recently he could prevent the registration of 524 illustrations by Otto Dix from the George Economou Collection in the list nationally valuable cultural heritage
